![]() ![]() I sprang up and ran back to the sandy shallows with the minnows. I was just about to puff out my cheeks like a blow fish when I realized the current had towed me to the deep part of the creek where the water was murky and last years autumn leaves had turned the bottom black. I even stuck out my tongue at them and they giggled. I wiggled my arms around like a jellyfish and they giggled. I made fishy lips at them and they giggled. Aspens are funny that way, they giggle a lot and I liked to be the reason they were giggling. Floating on my back I made faces at the sky and listened to the Trembling Aspen leaves giggling at me for being such a silly, sparkly fish. My pink swimsuit had itchy sparkles, but I liked the way I was a scaly, sparkly fish underwater. I swirled there for a moment(,) running my fingers along the top of the water(,) making a current of my own and then belly flopped, Kersplash, into my shadow. I leaped in with my arms waving and my legs kicking, the water responded with a meager gull-ump and the sand gushed around my ankles before settling in a ring around me. I decided I had better jump in before a shark found out there were lots of yummy minnows around these parts and swam here all the way from the M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I. Sharks eat minnows you know, so if there are any minnows left in the water that meant that there aren’t any sharks around to eat them. I dipped my toe in and watched the minnows swimming against the current dash away from me. ![]() Little Bess was gliding around in slow circles with just her cool gray eyes above the ripples and Wesson was squirting water through the gap in her teeth that wasn’t there yesterday but neither of them looked at me. “Is this a river?” I yelled at my sisters. and he was allowed to have push pops whenever he wanted to, so he was the kind of boy who knew stuff like that. The boy down the street told me and the boy down the street had a really big T.V. I knew that because there are sharks in the M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I River. ![]() Are there sharks in creeks? There are sharks in rivers. I stood at the waters edge and watched the little twigs bumbling about along the sandy bottom. Wesson got a running start and bounded in with a “bombs away!” The water splashed up around her, speckling her bathing suit to match her speckled nose. She was always doing things with her toes pointed. When we got to the creek Little Bess stepped into the current with her toes pointed and her eyes half closed. But either way the water wings made me strong. But today I had worn my water wings as we passed the scary dog and the scary dog was afraid of the water wings, I could tell ‘cause it didn’t bark, or maybe the scary dog was sleeping. Usually I wasn’t very good at hiding in her hair and the dog would bark and pull at it’s chunky chain and I would quiver in Little Bess’ brown netty strands while my second sister “CooWooCooCoo-ed” at the scary dog, unafraid. ![]() My oldest sister held my hand when we crossed the road and I tried to hide in her long brown hair when we got to the house with the scary dog. There was a creek on the other side of my neighborhood near the house with the scary dog and one hot summer day my two older sisters took me along with them for a swim. ![]()
